FALKLANDS ROW REARS ITS HEAD ONCE MORE.

Tensions Rise Over British Plans To Drill For Oil Off The Falklands Islands.

Ocean Guardian

Great Britain is once more under fire for allowing a Desire Petroleum rig to be towed halfway around the world from Scotland to start drilling sixty miles north of the Falklands Islands. Argentina continues to claim that the Falklands – Las Islas Malvinas in Spanish – are still illegally occupied by Britain and have made a formal objection to the UN. The Argentinian President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, recently reiterated Argentine claims to sovereignty – this time with the vociferous backing of Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader – at a summit meeting held in Cancún, Mexico. Both Latin American and Caribbean nations closed ranks in a show of support for Buenos Aires.

Fernández did say, however, that the Argentines would not make any effort to “blockade” or prevent British boats or rigs from reaching the Falklands. This went some way to allaying fears of re-igniting the threat of potential war, a war still fresh in the minds of both the British and Argentines and which last erupted in 1982 when the then-Premier, Margaret Thatcher sent the “British Task Force”  to reclaim the islands, culminating in a ten-week war between the two nations.

The drilling company said that the rig will be “firmly within UK waters” and that drilling operations could be expected to last about thirty days.

ABBEY ROAD : PRESERVATION ORDER VICTORIOUS.

Abbey Road recording studios, made famous by the Beatles in the 1960’s, have been declared a historic site by the British government in a move designed to protect the “pop music shrine” from any development plans to radically change the face of the building.

It had been feared that the studios might be sold off for residential development after the recording company EMI announced plans to put the building on the market. Interest had been mooted from the US, amongst other countries, and alarm had been voiced from several quarters, most notably from ex-Beatle Paul McCartney himself, as well as from music impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber, that the “huge cultural importance” of the site meant that the government should act to stop the shrine “falling into foreign hands”. Fears were calmed when Culture Minister Margaret Hodge saw fit to designate the venue a Grade II listed building.

The studios were, and are still to this day, synonymous with Liverpool’s “Fab Four” who, in 1969, recorded an album of the same name making the pedestrian crossing nearby famous worldwide when it appeared on the album cover.

JOHN TERRY STRIPPED OF THE ENGLAND CAPTAINCY

John Terry

John Terry the Chelsea centre-half was sensationally stripped of the England captaincy by manager Fabio Capello after the defender was apparently involved in an affair with a French model and girlfriend of ex-Chelsea team mate Wayne Bridge. Terry will be replaced as captain by Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand.

The “scandal” has been made potentially worse by the fact that current Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole recently suffered a broken ankle in an innocuous-looking challenge from Landon Donovan against Everton. Nothing remarkable about that until you realise that England second-choice left back is none other than Wayne Bridge himself, now of high-spending Manchester City.

This raises the question of whether Capello will want to pair the two together as he continues preparations for the World Cup in South Africa which starts in June, or indeed whether Bridge will want to play alongside John Terry.

On a brighter note for Capello, Wayne Rooney continued his impressive form netting two goals for Manchester United in a 3-0 victory over West Ham, bringing his season’s tally to twenty-seven in all competitions. Let’s hope his form doesn’t peak too early!

United’s other goal was scored by ex-England golden boy Michael Owen who recently expressed his virtual “resignation” to not being picked for the finals in South Africa as he has not been able to hold down a regular place in United’s forward line this season. Mr. Capello has already been quoted as saying that he will “not take players who are not playing and scoring regularly” for their club side to the finals, the first to be held on the African continent. This would seem to be a reasonable policy until you realise that perhaps England possess no one better than Owen to partner Rooney up front for England at the tournament. Only time will tell!
